SRR 103 Steve Matthews, Knox Seminary, and Imagining a Vain Thing

Carlos interviews Steve Matthews on his excellent book, Imagining a Vain Thing: The Decline and Fall of Knox Seminary:

 http://www.trinitylectures.org/imagining-vain-thing-p-170.html

This exposé by a former Knox student demonstrates how neglecting the historical grammatical hermeneutic of the Reformation leads to all sorts of fanciful eisegesis and ultimately heresy. A case in point is Warren Gage, the John-Revelation Project, and the controversy surrounding the medieval hermeneutics he taught at Knox Theological Seminary. It's a shame when such fiascos in reformed institutions are not resolved biblically.

This is a very informative and insightful book, and I learned new things about Reformed hermeneutics, including an enlightening discussion about typology and Marsh's dictum. A must read!

“Scripturalism—Christianity—is a whole view of things thought out together. It engages non-Christian philosophies on every field of intellectual endeavor. It furnishes a coherent theory of knowledge, an infallible salvation, a refutation of science, a theory of the world, a coherent and practical system of ethics, and the principles required for political liberty and justice. No other philosophy does.” (John Robbins, “An Introduction to Gordon H. Clark,” http://www.trinityfoundation.org/journal.php?id=192)

The essays are some of the best analyses of its meaning we have seen in print, written by the editor of the Standard Bearer. Far from being a sideshow, and far from being dead, the assault on the doctrines of Scripture by the faculty of Westminster Seminary determined the path that the Seminary, and to some extent, the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, would follow for the remainder of the century." SRR #27 | Have I Then Become Your Enemy

SRR welcomes Andrew Rappaport to the show this week as Tim and Andrew discuss the difficult task of sharing our faith with those who are closest to us. They open up about personal experiences and share insight into the word of God which calls us to be faithful even when others want us to remain silent. Tim extends an open invitation to his own family, who is predominantly Roman Catholic, to have an open, respectful dialogue about matters of the faith. Many times people equate disagreement with hatred and as Christians, we are called to love those who misunderstand us, falsely accuse us, revile against us, and even persecute us. We would like to give special thanks to Andrew Rappaport for having such a difficult conversation in the hopes of encouraging other believers. If you would like to email Andrew you can reach him at StrivingForEternity.org Questions? Comments? Feedback? SRR #6 | The Sabbath, Logic, and NCT's Straw Man Army | From Russia, With Love

Tim and Carlos are excited to introduce Owen Paun, a missionary to Bulgaria, to the podcast! In this episode, they discuss Russia's draconian, anti-evangelism laws; the Sabbath; quotes by New Covenant Theology (NCT) authors John Reisinger and David Gay; logic; NCT's army of fallacies; confessions; the tripartite distinction of the Mosaic law; and more. I apologize if I offended anyone when describing the Pharisees as retarded in a previous episode. I was not referring to the mentally handicapped, but to those who willfully deceive themselves and others. –Carlos
